How to Build a Morning Routine That Sticks

By Maya LinSeptember 3, 20263 min read

The internet loves an elaborate hour-long morning ritual, but the truth is that the routines people stick with are usually the boring, small ones. If you want a morning that works on a normal Tuesday, start by making it ridiculously easy to repeat.

Begin with one tiny habit

Pick a single action you can do even on your worst day: a glass of water, making the bed, or two minutes of stretching. One small win proofs to your brain that the routine is doable, and you can layer more on once that feels automatic. Most habits take a few weeks to settle, not a few days.

Keep your phone out of reach at first

Reaching for the phone is the fastest way to lose your morning to everyone else's priorities. Give yourself the first fifteen minutes screen-free. Leave the phone in another room, or at least across the bedroom, so the day begins with you instead of with notifications.

Tie new steps to old ones

Habits stick better when they ride on top of things you already do. Brush your teeth, then write one line in a journal. Put the coffee on, then open the curtains for daylight. These tiny couplings remove the daily decision of when to fit the routine in.

Leave room for something you enjoy

A routine you dread is a routine you'll drop. Build in one thing you genuinely look forward to, whether that's a slow cup of tea, a favorite song, or ten quiet minutes with a book. Pleasure is what makes you want to get up.

Expect it to feel awkward for a while

Some mornings will be messy and that's fine. The goal isn't a perfect streak, it's a rhythm you return to. When you miss a day, just start again the next morning without the guilt talk, and the habit will quietly take hold.
