How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes Properly

Why Dirty Brushes Hurt Your Skin

Between uses, a brush gathers product residue, oil, and bacteria that can clog pores and trigger breakouts or irritation. Washing them every 7 to 10 days is one of the simplest things you can do for clearer skin and smoother application.

What You Need

You do not need a cabinet of products. Lukewarm water, a gentle shampoo or brush cleanser, a clean towel, and your hands are enough. A small silicone cleaning mat is optional but makes dense brushes easier to freshen.

The Step-by-Step Wash

Keep the brush pointed downward and rinse only the bristles, never the whole head, because water inside the ferrule loosens the glue. Swirl the tip in a little cleanser in your palm, lather, then rinse until the water runs clear. Squeeze out excess moisture and reshape the head with your fingers.

Dry Them the Safe Way

Lay brushes flat on a towel with the heads hanging just off the edge, so any leftover water cannot seep into the handle. Avoid standing them upright to dry, and skip the hairdryer, which can crack the bristles.

How Often to Clean Each Brush

Brushes used with liquid foundation or concealer are best washed after every use, since damp product is a bacterial breeding ground. Powder brushes can go once a week, and eye brushes every few days to keep colours true and reduce the risk of infection. If a brush irritates your skin or smells off, wash it sooner, and if breakouts persist, a dermatologist can help pinpoint the cause.
