How to Treat Dull Skin with Exfoliation

Why Skin Looks Dull

As we age, the skin's natural cell turnover slows, so dead cells sit on the surface and scatter light instead of reflecting it. The result is a flat, tired look. Exfoliation clears that layer so smoother, brighter skin shows through and the products you apply next absorb better.

Pick the Right Exfoliant for Your Type

Chemical exfoliants are usually kinder than scrubs. Glycolic or lactic acid (AHAs) brighten and smooth; salicylic acid (BHA) dives into oily pores and helps with congestion. Dry or sensitive skin often tolerates lactic acid best, while oily skin can handle salicylic or a gentle AHA cleanser. Skip gritty physical scrubs that can cause tiny tears.

How Often Is Enough

For most people, once or twice a week is plenty to start, building to three if the skin tolerates it. Use one exfoliating product at a time and alternate days with other actives like retinol. If the skin feels squeaky, tight, or stingy, you have done too much and should pause.

What to Do After Exfoliating

Follow exfoliation with a calming moisturiser and, in the morning, sunscreen, because fresh skin is more sun-sensitive. Ceramides and hyaluronic acid help the barrier recover, and a vitamin C serum can support brightness. Hydration is what keeps the glow from fading.

Signs You Are Overdoing It

Redness, flaking, itching, or sudden sensitivity mean it is time for a break. Stop actives, return to a gentle cleanser and a hyaluronic serum morning and night, and let the barrier heal. If irritation lingers, a dermatologist can suggest a schedule that suits your skin.
